Why don't you try rechargable alkaline AA's? I've been using them for some time in my (seldom used) flash. They have the shelf life of ordinary AA's so I know that it'll work when picked up, even though I didn't recharge batteries last week. Unlike NiMh that work at 1.2V they work at 1.5V of ordinary alkalines. True, rechargable alkalines are only good for a 100 or so recharge cycles but that, I suppose, should not be an issue.
