I guess you could have always asked that. Why did anyone ever buy a Pentax over Nikon or Canon as an entry level SLR camera? I think that features, feel, and price were always big factors. It could be that lens price and quality were factors as well. On the other hand, if you are going to buy an entry level SLR, then you may not know a lot about the line you are buying into.
IMHO, when the Pentax SLR was most successful in the past, it had feature rich lower end models (like the ME Super). Of course, back then, I don't think Pentax had an online cadre of loyal users who encouraged potential customers to buy another brand camera.
