there are now external 3.5inch drive enclosures with memory card readers.
needs a hefty power supply such as from a car battery, but they exist.

Understood. But these aren't standalone devices with a CF slot and the
software to allow downloading. They're USB or Firewire and usually require
their own power supply. I have 250GB and 500GB Lacie hard drives I can
take with a laptop for extra storage/backup. Well the 500GB is a little
heavy and big for that.
