Similar situation with some great blue heron shots I made the other day.
The bird caught a fish and swallowed it and I got some great action
sequences. Unfortunately it was 12:30pm and the lighting was awful. (I was
on a walk with my daughter and just took the camera and 300mm "just in case"
knowing that the lighting was most-likely going to be bad) . No amount of
Photoshop work could "fix" the images to make the lighting any better. In
the end, I decided to save the RAW files only for the action sequence,
knowing I'll never print or display them. Great subject, good execution,
just horrible mid-day sunlight.
