That's correct, in non-A lenses the coupler lever only has to be actuated fully, or not at all. Since in A lenses this is the lever that sets the actual aperture it has to be calibrated accurately. Some non-A lenses will work this way, most will give inaccurate exposures. The voice of "experimental experience" speaking here. ;-)
