Sounds to me that there was a major improvement in the lens. The resolution improvement in
the camera should be hardly noticeable.

I've got news for you:  it won't.

For a reality check, have a look at DP Review's report on the Rebel XT.
They show the difference between the 6 and 8 megapixel cameras with the
same lens: Barely detectable. Then they show the same camera with both
the old and new versions of Canon's kit lens: Big difference. (And the
old version of the lens was "optimized for digital", too.)
