Okay, I looked it up. It's still against California state law to pick poppies 
or even to destroy them. Supposedly for environmental reasons, and because 
it's the state flower. (But see previous post about that, because I think the 
original law was passed back when, when people were still worried about opium 
dens -- due to the immigration of Chinese into California during Gold Rush 
days.) 

So, basically, all those weed wacking fools who are weed wacking poppies out 
of existence are breaking the law. Nice to know.

I am not sure, but I think it was also against California state law at one 
point to cultivate poppies in any way too. But I have since run across some 
things that indicate some people are buying poppy seeds and scattering them. 
Evidentially it is not against the law to buy CA poppy seeds. At least not now. 
More on that later.

Since I learned that I have been tempted to buy a bunch of bags of seeds and 
scatter them next year. Down with weed wacking state/county/city employees who 
are destroying all our poppies!!!
