The two lamps are competing with each other for the viewer's
attention. But as you said, the lights and shadows connect them
nicely. If I were to crop it, I would crop just above the lower lamp.
But that would be another picture:)

No. It is a nice diagonal composition. In my opinion you can have two
subjects in the same frame. And as the upper lamp is dominant, it can
be seen as the "main subject", and the lower lamp as a complement to
it.

As you can see I'm rather controversal about this photo. It is good as
is, and cropping out the lower lamp would make another good photo.
Can't decide which one I would like better.

Good question, but I can't answer it. I think that it depends on the
vision of the photographer.
