The contrast/brightness tools are controls for a curves tool however they only effectively provide a single control point along the curve. They are generally adequate but are ineffective if you need to anchor one section of the image (for instance shadows to mid-times) and adjust the gamma of another section (ie the highlights). For some of the copy work I do this would be great as any curves are best applied before the selected color-space gamma curve is imposed on the composite RGB file.
