I think this may be just your computer, Colin - I tried the same thing and it behaved exactly as it should have; complained that I hadn't disconnected the device before removing the card, but nothing more.

That's good. It may be my computer. But we must also remember that USB devices, like flash drives, can be easily damaged by way of a quick disconnect.
USB is designed to be hot unplugged. Both physically and s/w wise.
Now if it contains a live filesystem that is not up to date- that's a different issue.
