Okay, some "real" rules.

1. Take a LOT of pictures (when shooting). 
Easier with digital. That way something is bound to turn out.
2. However, the first 2-3 shots will still probably be the best. 
Because...
3. Don't overthink it. 
If I picked out something to shoot I probably picked it out for good 
emotional/visual reasons. I can move around and fiddle with exposure to get the 
best 
shot, etc. -- but overthinking it can also kill whatever drew me to it in the 
first place.
