I have no trouble swapping matte black and photo black inks on my Epson 2200. It's a simple process.
I have to delete the printer and re-load it in the Print Center (in addition to restarting Photoshop). If I leave the Matte cartridge in the printer and come back the next day to do more matte prints, I have to swap the photo black ink back in and out again. Each time it has to purge out the ink between cartridge and head so it probably costs me a fortune in wasted ink.
The amount of screwing around I had to do to find that out left a very bitter taste in my mouth. The upshot is that I just don't bother printing matte unless I need to do a decent-sized batch of prints.
