G'day DagT To me it looks like a red cardboard/paper heart shaped cutout that's been torched.
If I'm correct then I don't think you have to tell the story <g> In regards to the actual photo, I quite like it. Simple & abstract. If I had to find fault, it would be with the yellow stains on the white background. I think it might have looked better if they could have been avoided.
