I guess if they are being plonked down with respect to the surrounds that's not 
too bad but what I liked about London (last visit was 2001 so I haven't seen 
the Gherkin in person yet) as an international visitor was that its skyline 
wasn't like most other big cities, it was still relatively non-specular and 
pleasantly sedate.

The first notable intrusion was really the London Eye which I had the 
opportunity to see and photograph around there before it went up, I'm sure the 
Eye still has it's detractors too. Also the Gherkin certainly hasn't made a 
mark outside of the UK, this thread was the first I'd seem or heard about it, 
I'm sure I would have noticed on my next visit though :-)
