When the switch is on "Limit" it prevents the lens from focusing at its 4ft min. The lens is designated Macro because it focuses reasonably close for a 300mm lens and gives about 1/3 lifesize. I used to just keep my lens with the full range enabled so I could shoot distant and near subjects at all times. Christian
