The problem is one of preserving separation between the background and the bicycle rack, provided in the color version by color, not tonal intensity or focus zone sharpness. You have to push the values around to get that separation into the ballpark, using masks and layers for each segment of the image.
You can see the way I built it up by clicking the link at the bottom of the page. I started by creating the Channel Mixer Adjustment Layer, then adding Curves adjustment layers underneath it with masks and differential adjustment to RGB channels. Finally I added a vignette layer on top.
