The DSLR industry is maturing pretty quickly. The state of the art at the moment is 16mp from a 35mm sized chip. I recall Rob saying that 18mp was pretty much the limit from this chip size, so the present is pretty much it.
As the cost to produce the stuff goes down (the only real improvement left), Pentax will start to catch up pretty quickly.
