Windows XP Service Pack 2 breaks the support for Firewire mass storage
media. that means all hard drives and related media like card readers.
luckily, all of my external backup drives are dual USB 2.0/Firewire 400
drives, so i used the USB interface. that runs at about half the speed of
Firewire because the USB hardware protocol has much more overhead. the
hotfix for the problem doesn't work on my system. no update for the hotfix
has been announced yet.
