There was also simple logistics to consider. Pulling back the majority of the war machine industry to east of the Urals and setting up the factories to start building again took time. Remarkably little of it in fact but, because of that, armaments were in short supply at the beginning of hostilities. All the generals could do was send unarmed men into combat in the hope of slowing the advance down.
