It's not the same here, our pseudo sales tax (GST) is 10% country wide and it's very difficult to get out

Is that all? :) We started GST in..... 1986 at 10%, it's been 12.5% for a while now and I'm surprised it hasn't gone up even further.
GST is pretty straightforward as tax law goes in this country. But that doesn't make it any more likeable ;)
It's not hard to get out of it here - just start a business and register for GST. But even then you can only claim GST on business expenses, and only if the business loses money during the GST period as you claim the difference between GST payments and GST claims during that period. As a personal shopper the only legal way I can think of is to shop overseas and import items that are less than the "not worth the paperwork" value, currently NZ$400.
