I was quite deflated when I heard only a few years ago that it was staged. Well, only the kissing couple was staged, the rest of the passersby were "real", but still... I heard that he found the couple necking in a nearby bar, and offered them something like $50 (can't recall if that was each or for both) to pose for him. She later sued him (unsuccessfully). I, too, have sympathy for her (them?) but on a strict legal basis, they were paid, and accepted the terms. OTOH, I doubt that he had them sign a model release or anything. After he won the case, Doisneau gave her the signed print that was recently up for auction. Although I think the ruling in the court case was a right one, I'm glad to see she finally got some money after all these years. Whatever the case may be, it's a great photo (despite the stagedness of it), and and interesting story. cheers, frank -- "Sharpness is a bourgeois concept." -Henri Cartier-Bresson
