I was quite deflated when I heard only a few years ago that it was
staged.  Well, only the kissing couple was staged, the rest of the
passersby were "real", but still...

I heard that he found the couple necking in a nearby bar, and offered
them something like $50 (can't recall if that was each or for both) to
pose for him.

She later sued him (unsuccessfully).  I, too, have sympathy for her
(them?) but on a strict legal basis, they were paid, and accepted the
terms.  OTOH, I doubt that he had them sign a model release or
anything.  After he won the case, Doisneau gave her the signed print
that was recently up for auction.

Although I think the ruling in the court case was a right one, I'm
glad to see she finally got some money after all these years.

Whatever the case may be, it's a great photo (despite the stagedness
of it), and and interesting story.
