Notice how the baby's face is lit by warm tungsten light, and the mother's facial highlights by the cool daylight streaming in through the window. Typical mixed lighting situation. The only quick combat would have been flash. Fighting against the main light source like this is always going to be tricky. I avoid it like the plague - if I'm inside and in a room with a window shooting available light, I always sit 'riding the light'.
