Having shot my share of roses over time, I have always found this one problem. Trying to balance getting the petals in focus and keeping the background creamy. In this shot, the background is very nice, but there is some sacrifice to the petals. Always a balancing act. One very nice thing about this one is the delicate gradations of white in the petals. I'd be curious to know if you bracketed for different DOF to see how it would look with more in focus.
Bruce, my reasoning as slightly different than what you said above. This shot was made handheld. My Tamron 90/2.5 SP has 135 mm lens FOV on *istD. So I went for 1/200 sec speed to have comfortable ability to handhold. The aperture came out as it was. So I made few shots in various angles, but I did not bracket for DOF - I simply went for the smallest aperture I could get without defeating my ability to handhold...
I am still to obtain a shot of rose where I have sharpness that I could say is sufficient... I did not expect to get any reasonable shot this time too :).
