Hi Godfrey,
I have no idea what could have caused my problems, but if you hear anything 
please let me know. After eliminating the users with the log-in problem, I 
noticed the machine goes to the desktop much faster on the remaining and new 
user accounts. The somewhat slow startup seems to have preceded the 
installation of 10.3.9. So the problem may have been due to an existing 
condition that was in some way exacerbated by the upgrade. Perhaps it was 
caused by a file on one of the user accounts I deleted. I'll probably never 
know.
