Anybody here using k-mount lenses on a D/DS? I'm interested in the pros and cons. I realize that I will lose the automatic features of the camera/lenses, but I am used to shooting with an MX. What are the thoughts from those of you who have been down this path.
Yes, lots of people use older k-mount "K" and "M" lenses with the *ist-D/DS. On the DS you just have to set a menu setting to allow for the use of the aperture ring to set aperture. Then set the camera to manual mode, set your aperture, push the AE-L button, and the camera will check your exposure for you. It works pretty well once you get used to it.
The second question is on the flash systems. Will the D/DS control a Vivitar 285 flash unit; both with and without the remote sensor? Are there any issues with the triggering voltages required for the 285?
I'm not familiar with that particular Vivitar flash. I've always used Pentax dedicated flashes. But I can tell you that I've found my older AF330FTZ to work just fine, and know that the AF220, AF400FTZ, and AF500FTZ also work on the *ist-DS. Someone else will hopefully chime in and help with regards to the specific flash you're asking about.
