lol!
I've done that many times myself. Unpacking and packing everytime I want to use both hands to do something, and then unpacking again is always a bit of a chore with a less than optimized kit.
Perhaps if I wore a backpack? More cumbersome yet...
Backpacks are almost always clumsy for getting stuff in and out, but handy for carrying a load when you are moving.
Fact is, if you're going to bring your photography "into the field" as it were, you do have to carry a bit of gear with you, and how you do that varies considerably from person to person, according to their tolerance for clutter and such.
In other words, I've never found the perfect way for me. Yet.
Perfect varies depending upon instantaneous needs. I tend carry only a small kit at any given time, and have a bevy of bags to choose from that allow fast, uncluttered access for carrying any given couple of bits. Most of the time, I've found one to four lenses and fast access to the camera can be accomplished with the Billingham L2 or Tamrac Superlight 5 these days.
But then, most choices are a compromise of some sort... To each his own.
Yup. Bags and straps are always the most personal photographic accessories.
