Hi Rob,

That doesn't sound like you. Are you sure you're still you? I agree that many
of us mostly rely on anecdotal evidence regarding lens quality, whether first or
second hand. Still scientifically conducted tests, on a large variety of
samples of the same lens, would produce some definitlive, measureable results,
no?

Hi Tom,

No it's me alright, no one really tests the things that interest me. Most published lens test are simple monochrome sharpness/distortion tests. These and MTF graphs only provide a rudimentary indication of how a lens will perform. For DSLR intents (I rarely shoot film now) nearly any decent lens will out-
perform the current Sony sensor sharpness wise (I didn't even have to work at JPL to work that out). However a lenses prevalence to exhibit CA or flare can really only be gained by looking at test shots as can bokeh etc.

Aha, now we're down to the brass tacks...
Unless the lens is a provable dog, it's really the way the sensor and the accompanying electronics, including firmware (?) that determine outcome, from a sharpnesss standpoint, and it's back to the lens for CA and flare defects and quality of bokeh?
If (satistically) everyone's basically happy with the DA lens, what else could it be, other than human failure to set thing up right...which most tests rely on...

Good points, Rob
