Very good advice. However some of us generally have to ship a lens half way
around the world then deal with gov't customs and clearance agents in order
just to test it. Technical tests have their place in helping some us weed the
junk out before committing.

Good tests would help. Casual tests posing as technically rigorous, made by photographing chimneys and brick walls, are a waste of time and effort, don't give adequate information to be useful.


I do plenty of casual testing and call it that. When I want to do real testing, I use a resolution chart and a rigorously defined procedure.
