The SMC 1000/8 is still a good lens for a fraction of the price (around 1K 
used).  I wonder if using the CA prone 1000/8 would be better than using a 
400mm or 600 ED lens and cropping.  Grain (and lower resolution) versus 
chromatic aberrations.
