With regard to manual focus lens collection, optical quality
and/or superiority to AF is the classic fallback position.

Perhaps there is some reason for this? Such as, optical quality is kind of important?

I have some very nice Pentax lenses made in the mid 1970's.
One in particular, the SMC Pentax 50m/1.4 is a favourite of mine, enough so
that i have more than one sample of it.
I recently aquired an FA50/1.4.

Compared to the older lens, it feels like cheap junk, and looks like a small
pile of carefully formed moose puke.
While I haven't done formal comparisons, my impression from shooting with
both the old lens and the new one, the old lens is higher contrast, higher
acutance than the new one.

The K lens is also nicer to use.

Whether this holds true across the board, I don't know.
I see no reason why it wouldn't, however.
