They are common on this side of the state, so I assume they'd be found in the Detroit area. They are not as urban a bird as some though - I see only a handful at my feeders by the house, but I see tons of them at the feeders at the Kalamazoo Nature Center (located out and away from the city, as you'd expect.)

Their characteristic behavior is to run upside down along tree bark. In the wild they eat insects and some seeds - pine cone seeds for example. At feeders they'll eat suet and some seeds (like sunflowers).

There are two species - red-breasted and white breasted. I have never really looked closely enough to say which is more common around here.

Thanks Mark. Is the nuthatch common in Southeast Michigan? Do they eat insects on the tree bark? I don't remember seeing one before, and this guy didn't seem interested in my feeder and seeds.
Paul

As others have noted - nuthatch. (As Carson would of said "And if you've
ever had your nuts hatched, you know how painful that can be....")

Nice shot but the Bokeh reminds me of what I get from the A* 400 f2.8 in
similar situations - sort of a double vision effect as opposed to a
blurring. Nice shot still as these birds are not exactly large.
