I enabled myself today with not one, but two TCs. B&H had a used Tamron 2x TC for $44 off the price of a new one, in EX condition. So I bought that and a new 1.4x Tamron TC as well. Unlike last time I tried to buy one, this time both TCs allowed me to manually focus. I'm still not sure what caused that the last time, but I'll take it. :) Thanks again to everyone who helped me with the TC decision earlier.
