To get back to the original question from another perspective, "How do you use 
a zoom lens?":

With a prime lens, you have a particular field of view which is unchangeable. 
So you move around a subject, seeking the perspective and angle to cover what 
you want to have in your exposure. Your range from the primary subject will 
determine the perspective as well as the field of view that you include in the 
picture.

With a zoom lens, you have a range of fields of view. You also move around a 
subject seeking out the perspective and angle of view to capture the primary 
subject, and then you can change how much of the background/surroundings you 
want by adjusting the focal length of the lens.

That's how I work with them and how they differ in my approach to composition.
