I suspect the rear LCD cover material on the *ist D is fabricated from some 
kind of crystal like a tough watch face. I've never protected mine and it 
doesn't have a scratch even though the camera regularly brushes against 
clothing an other less desirable objects when it's hanging off my shoulder.
