You can wrap the lens in a plastic bag if you like, just make sure you poke a hole in the end :)
Seriously though, I've been known to do this in damp weather. A deep lens hood helps too, but I guess if you're shooting stars then the front element is still going to be exposed to whatever gravity throws at it.
