True but I'm looking for a fast lens to use in low light. Better viewing and focusing just doesn't cut it.

I used quite a few fast lenses at full aperture with black and white film (from K28/2 to 200/2.5). All are somewhat soft at full aperture but all gave me plenty of definition and contrast for my needs.


I don't know for what use you need the Vivitar 28/2, but, especially for stage photography, flare may be more of an issue than definition. It can unacceptably lower contrast. Without the benefits of SMC, I'd find or make the longest rectangular or tulip hood that clears the finder. It will need to be much longer if the lens is used on a D camera.
