The F* 300 f4.5 that I have owned for 24 hours will go back on Monday.
The seller has agreed to take it back and refund my money. I am guessing
that this lens was dropped (barrel wobble, as I described earlier
today), and that one or more optical elements is out of alignment. I
tested it today against the Sigma EX 70-200 f2.8 at 200 mm. and the
Tokina AT-X 400 f5.6 -- a mud brick wall, my usual test subject. Tripod,
of course, and subject distance changed with focal length. I expected
the F* 300 to perform similarly to the Sigma. It didn't. Instead, at f8,
it performed about equal to the Tokina (3.9 vs. 2.8 on Photodo). At f4.5
and 5.6 vs. the Tokina at f5.6 (wide open) the Tokina outperformed it by
a wide margin. This shouldn't happen, so I have to conclude that the
lens is seriously damaged. For what this puppy cost I can't take a
chance on it not being repairable.

Wonderfully small and lightweight, and a sensual delight just to gaze
into that lovely glass.

Anyone know where there's another one for sale -- F or FA?

Joe
