BTW, if I remember from some reviews, the image quality of the sensor
prototyped in Pentax MZ-D and used in quickly departed Contax digital
was very high for the time. It had other issues like very high power
consumption and low ISO but the people using it liked the quality more
than from half-frame 6MP DSLRs. There is a review of the Contax on
Luminous-Landscape somewhere.

So they have already tried, and the camera could be quite advanced for
its time, but it probably wasn't marketable and I heard here on PDML
that there were also problems with the chips (from Philips or
Panasonic IIRC) - consistency or something.
