I had one of the Nikon 70-300mm. I always suspected that it was built by Tamron, but when I compared it against the Tamron (before buying...), I felt the Nikon was better finished and performed a little better at most settings. Whether it's just a matter of additional quality control or whatever, I don't know.

In general, I found the performance of both was best in the 135-220mm range. They are compact, lightweight and convenient to carry, if a little slow for available light work.
