   Could be dirt in the hole, between spring and the ball, that
acts as an insulator when the lens is mounted normally. If you rotate
the lens slightly, ball's position in the hole changes, and electrical
contact is established again. If this is the case then a cleaning should
suffice.
   It never happen to me, but I remember some list members pointing
out similar problems with heavily used lenses accumulating dirt under
the mount.
