You are correct. However, except in severe cases, It's not how we perceive things. In real situations, as opposed to viewing a photograph) our brain imposes itself between "seeing" and "perceiving."

I think you are just so conditoned to the perspective distortion
that when the distortion is removed you think something is wrong.
Shift lenses and corrected perspective look great to me, uncorrected
looks unnatural!

Perspective distortion is what shift lenses do. Converging parallels and the like are how we see things naturally.
