In UK law [useful, I know 8-)] the _retailer_ is the person you have a contract with and only they are responsible to sort out the problem. Also, if the device has been used as specified, it does not matter how long you have owned it. The court (if the matter gets there) will decide if it has lasted long enough. It's been that way since 1898.
I am vastly unimpressed.
