the 1.7X AF converter is unique in the Pentax world. it converts a MF lens into an AF one. all 3rd party AF converters have fixed elements and pass the drive shaft through.

This sounds very odd.
I would have thought that it worked like the 1.7x Pentax-F, which means that
the lenses inside will slide back and forth when auto focusing is activated.
I would believe that the AF mechanism of the converter should not be
connected with the AF-rod of the camera lens - at least it isn't on the
Pentax-F 1.7 AF Adapter.
I only have the manual (KAX) version, which works lika any othe
teleconverter,s except the magification is adjustable.
