A slow lens is not necessarily a bad lens. In fact cheep, slow lenses can be quite useful, although perhaps not "professional".
My cheap F 4-5.6/35-80mmm is actually quite a nice performer. It beats my Tamron 3.5-5.6/28-80mm Aspherical in every respect. I guess the are priced alike. The trick is to stay in business by offering usefull gear, that most people can afford. Unlike Leica or Contax... :-) I mean - photographers don't buy these lenses anyway - unless of course, they come with a Canon or Nikon mount!
