Colin, if you are planning to scan OLD slides they will probably be
Kodachromes. Kodachrome is/was a dye additive process that could produce
long lasting colors compared to the Ektachrome and Anscochrome slides of the
past generations. Some Nikon scanners, as has been mentioned, have a setting
for Kodachrome. Results vary. ICE is a no-no because of the high relief of
the Kodachrome dye images on the film. I have slides from my family
collections back to the early 50's. The Ektachromes are faded while the
Kodachromes are as brand new. They scan well on my Nikon 4000 ED. Good Luck,
