That somewhat depends on the software being used to read the message. Technically: Yes, the message is still in the old thread. Good software will recognise that, by examining the header fields (references) specifically put there for threading. Lazily-written software, which attempts to do threading based on the Subject: header, will be fooled. If you can edit headers, you can still use the lazy approach of using "Reply" to start a new thread, as long as you remember to delete the References: header. Personally I find it easier to simply define a mail alias for the discussion list (I use pdml).
