What you're seeing may be related to using a flash, in that the lighting is more even than if it was window light or even studio light. The flash is bounced off the ceiling, so it's somewhat akin to open sky light. Of course conventional portrait lighting usually tries to separate the subject from the background, with the latter getting either more or less light than the subject. However, in this case I think the fur and wall distinction is more a result of deep black on vibrant red and both being in focus. I would have liked to get him a bit more away from the wall. But since he was posing nicely, I went with what I had. I've printed it at 11 x 17, and there the edge between black and red is a bit softer.

the black fur of Willy and the red background seems - for lack of a better
word - artificial. It doesn't seem quite natural - it's too defined, if
that makes any sense. Could that be a result of using the flash?
