Or just messages lost to overload due to spam. Spam now accounts for about 80% of email traffic now and since its distribution over time isn't constant, sudden peaks can just overwhelm some systems. Email isn't an inherently reliable medium. I just got message from someone who had to send twice. Both times from the same address, but the first one bounced for no reason than anyone can detect.
