Or just messages lost to overload due to spam. Spam now accounts for
about 80% of email traffic now and since its distribution over time
isn't constant, sudden peaks can just overwhelm some systems. Email
isn't an inherently reliable medium. I just got message from someone who
had to send twice. Both times from the same address, but the first one
bounced for no reason than anyone can detect. Just some server somewhere
along the way coughed.
