I had the Sigma EX 70-200 2.8 and found it to be a very competent  lens.
I have seen this lens used on many a photojournalist's camera. You don't
say what system you are on but I suppose we must assume Pentax (as this
is supposed to be a Pentax list, ahem) in which case I would always
advise a Pentax lens. Consider a well used Pentax 80-200 2.8 ? If
availability is an issue, then the Sigma EX's will do. They are *not* SMC
however......
