Sunderland has the National Glass Centre. National as in it's a good word to put in the title of a museum/other heritage business as it makes people think that it's Government approved or something. Sunderland was one of the earliest places in the UK to have a glass making industry after the Romans. On the roof of the National Glass Centre (which is made out of, yes, glass and you can walk on it) is the pictured object. It is a 8ft by 4ft shape of glass attached to the vertical pylons, that has been deliberately made wrongly, in that it was not properly cooled thus allowing stresses to build up in it. These lead to the cracking that is evident in the picture if you look carefully. Last time I saw it, before Christmas, it had a big crack right through the middle with about a one inch gap. I noticed on this day that I was able to position the sun behind it and that, if I got the exposure right, it would appear as a strongly glowing disc against the underexposed sky. Well I got the exposure half right... But it turned out OK anyway. As with most of my stuff, the slide is much better than the scan.
Trust me, I'm a PDMLer. </long and boring explanation>
